Living with the Waves of Bali: Surfer Lee Seul-ki

Seul-ki enjoys embracing challenges and personal growth she learns from the waves, while slowly creating her own rhythm.

With the love that surfing brought, she moved to Bali and is exploring new possibilities amidst Bali’s free and energetic lifestyle.

Let's follow Seul-ki's wave-like journey together.

Q.

Hello. Seul-ki, please give us a brief introduction.

A.

Hi there. I'm Lee Seul-ki, living and surfing in Bali.

Q.

I've known you for a while, but I never expected you to become a surfer such as this.

Let's chat today about the stories of rapidly choosing, challenging, and adapting during these periods.

Firstly, as far as I know, before moving to Bali, you relocated to Busan from Seoul even without significant ties there. And now you're in Bali?

What motivated you to make such daring choices?

A.

I'm the type of person who needs to do things right away.

Just thinking about them doesn’t lead to results.

I honestly don’t quite understand the idea of 'best choice'.

You won't know without trying, so I always think, even if it's the wrong choice, since I made it, let's not regret it and have fun. That itself seems meaningful.

Initially, I moved to Busan from Seoul because after I started surfing, I always had a dream of living near the sea.

At first, I thought Busan was the only place in Korea where I could immediately fulfill this dream, so I moved there.

The reason I moved from Busan to Bali was because of a surfer trip. During a Bali trip, I met my current boyfriend who lives there, and naturally, I wanted to live together and enjoy surfing. After much contemplation, I started a new life in Bali.

Moving to Bali required convincing my parents and sorting everything out, which was not an easy decision. However, I thought I could finally live the life I dreamed of, so I moved to Bali.

Living overseas in such a hot country isn't easy.

However, because I have someone I love and I gain new goals through daily surfing, those challenges don’t seem like much.

Therefore, it seems like a great choice!

Q.

The words 'great choice' fill me with such comfort and pride ㅎㅎ

Could you convince me about the charms of Bali?

A.

Though the weather is hot, the atmosphere is always lively.

There are many dogs on the streets, and even they seem so happy.

Plus, the fitness community is very active, making it a perfect country for those who enjoy working out.

Q.

I'm curious about your daily routine in Bali, Seul-ki.

A.

The best times for surfing are sunrise and sunset.

For sunrise surfing, you enter the water usually between 6:00 and 6:30 AM, no later than 7:30 AM.

To catch these times, I wake up between 5:00 and 6:00 AM and start heading out. Since we visit different spots daily, sometimes you need to leave even earlier if it’s farther away.

One surfing session generally lasts about two hours. After the morning session, we review and train using footage shot with drones or cameras. And then...

After eating, it’s usually around 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM.

After lunch, visitors might go sightseeing, while I might do a bit of work or take a nap if I'm tired. If I’m up to it, I go surfing again in the afternoon.

Since the sun sets earlier in Bali than in Korea, and restaurants close early unless they’re well-known, I eat dinner early and hurry back home to rest and sleep.

Q.

Surfing as a miracle morning..

What does surfing mean to you, Seul-ki?

A.

It's just something I have to do as soon as I wake up.

Rather than showing off, surfing feels like a real part of life.

Q.

You’ve made it a part of life indeed..

Seems like you’re living the life you want right now, Seul-ki.

But there are truly many people who find making such courageous choices difficult.

Could you offer a word of encouragement to them?

A.

I live in an environment I wanted, but I’ve learned that every choice comes with responsibility.

Yet, I believe that rather than just thinking or wishing ‘I should try this’,

'I’ve tried even that' I hope people lots of experiences turn into memories like this.
