Why are people so into HYROX? — 6 stories from Bangkok

Bangkok cityscape with the title of LinkO Trend Research’s feature on what draws people to HYROX.

What is it about HYROX that pulls people in?

Even standing at the same starting line, the reasons for being there differ for everyone. Some want to beat their past record, while others want to challenge themselves with a new workout. Spending time with family or friends might be the reason they decided to sign up. The stories of the people at the starting line, together with participation data, offer clues to understanding the appeal of HYROX and its place in the broader fitness market.

To explore these questions, we traveled to HYROX Bangkok. This Bangkok event was held at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center (QSNCC) from August 13 to 16, 2026. A HYROX race alternates eight 1 km runs with eight functional workout stations, and you can participate not only in singles but also in doubles or team relays. Event Schedule and Division Guide↗

On-site, LINKO wanted to hear why people chose HYROX. Out of many workouts and events, why HYROX? How did they prepare, what did they experience on-site, and what meaning did they find in the race?

What brought them to the starting line, and what did the challenge and the experience of sharing it with others mean to them? This edition of LINKO Trend Research explores their answers.

HYROX participants speaking with LINKO during interviews at HYROX Bangkok 2026.

INSIGHT 1. Competing with your past self

What goals do participants have in mind at the starting line? In the interviews, we could hear a desire to test their limits and perform a little better than they had before. Even in a ranked race, each participant can measure the challenge against their own previous experience.

“HYROX is not about competing with others; it's about challenging my own limits.” — Sarah

“Every time I enter a race, I want to be at least a little bit faster than my past record.” — Nadya

This goal turns the same race from a competition with others into a process of facing one's own limits. For some, simply crossing the finish line without giving up means surpassing their limits, and for others, shaving just a few seconds off their previous record is proof of growth. The charm of HYROX lies in running toward your own goal, not someone else's pace, and seeing at the finish line whether they have moved beyond their previous best.

INSIGHT 2. A race where you are not alone

What happens around participants as they test their limits? In the interviews, along with records, participants also spoke about the cheering and atmosphere at the event. It is an experience where people run together despite different skill levels and even cheer for strangers to cross the finish line.

“Even if our skills are different, we run together in one race. The atmosphere is always bright, and everyone is willing to help each other.” — Shahan

“Even if we don't know each other, everyone cheers for each other, wishing that everyone finishes the race.” — Tae-ah

The atmosphere of cheering for each other's challenge becomes another reason to remember the race. Along with how well they did, the encouragement they received can remain just as strongly in their memory. To understand the value of HYROX, we must look not only at the race structure but also at the relationships participants experience within it.

INSIGHT 3. People bring other people to the race

The influence of others begins before participants even reach the starting line. When asked how they found out about HYROX and why they participated, friends and family frequently appeared in their answers. The interest of close ones became the motive to participate, and the opportunity to take on the challenge together added to their excitement.

“My friends really love HYROX, so I naturally joined them.” — Pan Pan

“This is my first time participating, and I'm even more excited because I get to do it with my 68-year-old mother.” — Pong

Here, relationships are both the spark of interest in HYROX and the reason to participate directly. Hearing about the event may not be enough to inspire someone to enter, but encouragement from a friend or family member can make the challenge feel more immediate and achievable. The way participants inspire others to join is an important clue to understanding how the charm of HYROX spreads.

INSIGHT 4. Different sporting backgrounds lead to the same start line

Participants came to HYROX from a wide range of sporting backgrounds. From pole dancing to cycling and tennis, different sports experiences led to a single race. They approached a new challenge using abilities developed through familiar sports.

“I do pole dancing. I wanted to take on a new cardio challenge.” — Summer

“One of us cycles, and the other plays tennis.” — Gert & Mew

This meeting shows that HYROX can be an opportunity to expand existing workout experiences. It allows participants to draw on familiar strengths while adapting to new movements and demands. It is also worth noting that people from different sporting backgrounds can come together around the same goal.

INSIGHT 5. Because you don't have to choose between running and strength work

There were also reasons to be drawn to the very structure of HYROX, which combines running and functional workouts. It allows them to experience multiple workout elements in a single race and prepare their physical strength in line with that goal.

“It's not just running, and it's not just functional workouts either, you know.” — Melo

“HYROX is a workout that can build both strength and cardiovascular endurance at once.” — Christie

The different events of running and strength training are connected within the process of preparing for the race. For those who want to test multiple abilities together, the unique structure of HYROX can be a reason to challenge themselves.

INSIGHT 6. Beyond records, the goal is to keep moving for life

The stories about the race also led to expectations for their future lives. Their reasons included maintaining physical strength as they aged and showing their families what it means to take on a challenge.

“I think maintaining both strength and cardiovascular endurance together is important as you age.” — Christie

“I hope my challenge will be a good inspiration to my child as well.” — Min

From this perspective, HYROX becomes an opportunity to express how they want to live. Within the challenge of making a record, the desire to stay active for a long time and the message they want to convey to their loved ones are contained together. The more we look closely at the reasons for participation, the more clearly we can see how the same race takes on a different meaning in each person’s life.

The charm of HYROX, as seen through the interviews, connected self-challenge, relationships, expansion of workout experiences, and expectations for the future. How do these stories from the field align with the growth trend of HYROX? Let's now look at the related data and numbers together.

The Appeal and Growth of HYROX in Numbers

① Interview themes also appear in broader participation data.

Infographic comparing LINKO interview themes, Strava running club participation growth, and HYROX Bangkok 2025 race divisions.

According to LINKO's classification of the field interviews, the percentage of mentioning the shared atmosphere was 82%, self-challenge and growth was 77%, and participating with friends, family, or partners was 55%. The desire to challenge one's limits and the desire to be with others appeared side by side.

This interest is also found in the broader fitness culture. According to Strava's 2024 report, participation in running clubs on the platform increased by 59% year-on-year. Even in workouts where individual records are set, the way people meet and move together is spreading. Strava 2024 Report↗

In HYROX, the shared experience also leads to the entry division. According to the proportion by division of the TrainRox Bangkok 2025 event data compiled by LinkO, singles accounted for 26%, doubles 58%, and relay 16%, with doubles and relays making up **74%** in total. Connecting these three sets of data, we pay attention to the desire to pursue personal growth while also wanting to share that process with others. HYROX provides both the goal of challenging individual records and the option of participating as partners or teams. LinkO sees this combination as an important clue explaining the charm of HYROX.

② Participation grew approximately 7.5-fold in two years.

Animated chart showing the HYROX participation figures presented in LINKO’s research for 2023 and 2025.

The global participation scale of HYROX grew about 7.5 times in two years, from about 100,000 in 2023 to about 750,000 in 2025. In Infront's 2025 review, the annual participation scale is also introduced as more than 750,000. Infront 2025 Review↗

What's noteworthy in this change is that interest led to actual participation. Moving beyond knowing about HYROX and watching videos, the scale of taking time to prepare and participating in the race has grown. It is a trend where HYROX is establishing itself as a challenge that more people want to try for themselves.

Why did it spread so fast? We think the reasons might partly lie in the desire to check one's growth, the structure combining multiple workouts, and the fact that you can challenge together with people around you, which we met in the interviews.

③ As participation increased, HYROX expanded its global event footprint.

The increased scale of participation also leads to the size of the region and venue where the event is held. In 2025, HYROX held 80 events across 31 markets. A stage to participate in has been prepared in many regions of the world. Infront 2025 Review↗

In Bangkok, we could see the speed at which a city's event grows. In the first event in May 2025, 8,700 people participated, and in March 2026, more than 17,500 people registered. Subsequently, it was reported that more than 20,000 people from over 60 countries participated in the August 2026 event that LinkO visited. Although there are differences in the criteria for participation and registration, the published scale has expanded rapidly. BITEC Event Review, August 2026 Event Report↗

The change seen here is that individual challenges are expanding into international experiences where people from various countries gather. For participants, it is a place to test their own records, and at the same time, it becomes a stage to experience the same race with people from different backgrounds. The Bangkok field shows how the growth of HYROX is expanding the scale of the event and the range of people participants can encounter.

④ The HYROX experience continues before and after the race.

Once you decide to participate in HYROX, you plan your training up to that day. You look for programs and gear as needed, and if you are participating in an event in another city, you prepare for travel and accommodation. After the event, you might share records and photos, or set the next race as your goal.

The HYROX experience extends beyond the time between the start and finish lines. This is because a single goal can connect training, meeting people, traveling, and sharing records.

The data to look at this trend in a wider context is the wellness economy. The Global Wellness Institute, in its 2024 report, calculated the global wellness economy at $6.3 trillion in 2023, and presented forecasts at the time of about $6.8 trillion in 2024, about $9 trillion in 2028, and an expected compound annual growth rate of 7.3% from 2023 to 2028. This is a figure that covers wellness as a whole, not just the market size of HYROX. GWI 2024 Global Wellness Economy Monitor↗

Against this background, LINKO pays attention to the fact that HYROX can connect various experiences into a single goal. When the time spent preparing, the people you went with, and the memory of finishing accumulate, the race holds a greater meaning in an individual's life. That value remains in both the satisfaction of the event day and the experience before and after.

※ The above insights are compiled and interpreted by LINKO based on field interviews and public data. The proportion of our own interviews is limited to the subjects of the coverage and does not represent all participants. The target, timing, and compilation standards of each data source are different, and the proportion of each division should be distinguished from individual participation rates.

Challenges bring people to the start line. Relationships can bring them back.

To understand the growth of HYROX, we must look at the process of how people enter, along with the number of participants. It is a flow where an individual's challenge becomes a shared experience, and that experience leads to another person's reason to participate.

It starts with each person's goal. Performing the same event in the same order, HYROX clearly shows what to prepare and challenge. People who have done different sports can also connect their experiences to a new goal called HYROX.

When the recommendation of friends or family is added, the challenge becomes a joint preparation. They match training schedules, practice difficult movements, and wait for the same race. What remains with the participants is not only the finish record but also the experience with the people they shared the process with.

That experience also spreads around. Someone who came to cheer might want to challenge themselves next time, or a friend who saw photos and stories shared by a participant might become interested. If existing participants train with new people while preparing for the next race, one participation becomes the starting point of another participation.

Here, there is both a flow of re-participating and a flow of bringing new people. Gyms and communities become touchpoints where people meet and prepare even between races. It is a structure where the HYROX experience can continue beyond the day of the event.

LINKO interpreted this from the perspective of ‘Challenges create participation, and relationships create the next season’. It means that when the experience of preparing together and receiving cheers is added to the desire to test one's limits, a reason to look forward to the next HYROX can also be created.

When looking at the power of HYROX to pull people in, we need to look not only at the racing method and records but also at who the participant prepares with, what they remember, and to whom they pass that experience on.

What stays with participants after HYROX?

This is the point that LINKO ultimately wanted to look into in Bangkok. Within a single HYROX race, what do people expect and what kind of experience do they gain? For some, the growth confirmed by records, and for others, the process achieved with friends or family may remain more deeply.

If you have participated in or are interested in HYROX, ask yourself: What is pulling me to HYROX? Among finishing and records, the combination of running and strength, and the people preparing together, what are you looking forward to the most?

Another question remains for the gym owners: Among the experiences that members expect from HYROX, what can be continued at our gym as well? It could be a time to talk about personal goals, an opportunity to prepare together, or a place to share experiences after completing a challenge. Knowing what is needed can start by listening to the members' stories.

To keep that experience going consistently, daily operations such as setting up classes and participation opportunities, and communicating with members are also necessary. LINKO, a group fitness member management platform operated by HIVIS, helps with that operation through member management and community features.

LINKO Trend Research will continue to deliver changes in fitness culture by looking at people in the field and data together. We hope that this Bangkok story will serve as an opportunity to newly understand HYROX and think about the experiences you expect and want to leave with your members.
