[ Meeting with Yuna Kim, CEO of Climb to the Moon ]

Today's guest is Yuna Kim, a former national climbing athlete, current national coach, and CEO of Climb to the Moon, who has a diverse career entirely in climbing.

Q. Hello Yuna, could you please introduce yourself briefly?

A.

I've been involved in sports climbing for about 20 years now.

Currently, I've been a coach for about 15 years and I'm also working exclusively with the national team.

I see myself as a coach who has been on this path as a climbing instructor for a long time.

Q. You've been climbing for a long time; how and why did you start climbing when you began?

A.

I've always loved exercising since I was young, so I've consistently engaged in physical activities.

Among them, there was a climbing center at the sports complex operated by the city near my home.

The main reason I started exercising there with my younger sibling and my mother was because it seemed like a good opportunity. It was a sport that I could have tried just once and stopped, but going there with the three of us and continuously doing it became a significant motivator.

Q. From the questions beforehand, you mentioned, "When I started getting into climbing, my family was going through a tough financial period, but it became a turning point." Could you tell us a bit more about this?

A.

As I started transitioning into an athlete's life, it was a really tough economic period for my family. Although we could have been distant, the shared experience of being within the safe space of climbing helped us stay together and overcome challenges with energy. Climbing became more than just a simple exercise for our family; it became an integral part of our lifestyle.

Q. Because of that process, you've now become a successful coach. What do you think about the vision for your business?

(excerpt)

Could you explain a bit about the vision you have in mind for your business?

A.

Before creating Climb to the Moon, I decided against building a large rock gym and opted for a smaller setup. The idea was that if many large gyms opened and more beginners started climbing, there would be a greater need for quality education to enable better climbing movements. That's the vision behind Climb to the Moon.

Thus, our climbing gym is quite small in size.

Despite the size, it’s meant to be a home gym concept where many people can learn to enjoy climbing. Although small spaces might have fewer routes and could feel limiting, we try to focus on the intricacies of each route to provide an enjoyable and detailed climbing experience.

Q. So, in the distant future, how would you like to be remembered in the climbing scene?

A.

I think it would be great to be known as someone who presented various directions.

Because if my juniors can only think of one or two paths when they think of 'climbing,' that limits them.

However, there are endless possibilities with climbing as a content. I hope to serve as a guide who can offer diverse paths to explore.

From the conversation with Yuna Kim, one could feel the passion and learn about practicing wellness through different exercises. I hope this energy reaches you too.
