A nurse who cared for people's last moments in a hospice ward.
And now, running a CrossFit and high-run (Hyrox) gym,
coaching to help people with new beginnings.
Today's podcast meetup star,
Coach Cindy Hwang will share her story with us.

“I wasn’t someone who was good at exercising”
Coach Cindy introduces herself like this.
Surprisingly, Coach Cindy
wasn't someone who has been working out since childhood, nor was she a physical education major.
Even her start in CrossFit
was more about responding to
a suggestion from her husband rather than her choice.
In this unfamiliar space,
Coach Cindy's life direction began to change.
Using skills learned from the hospice ward
Before exercise,
the keyword that shaped Coach Cindy's life was ‘care’.
In the past, Coach Cindy
was a hospice ward nurse.
The hospice ward is a place
where emotional support is more crucial than medical treatment.
“There’s hardly anything medical that can be done for them.
Instead, I could offer emotional support.”
Here, Coach Cindy realized.
People endure when someone sincerely watches over them
Recognizing even one small change can be a powerful support
And this approach
is carried into her current coaching philosophy.
“I care for members as if they were patients”
Coach Cindy's coaching method is a little different.
“I observe them the way I’d monitor blood pressure changes,
to see why they're struggling today.”
Whether they need skills,
or courage,
or whether today is just a day to rest.
Past experiences shaped Coach Cindy into an empathetic coach.
‘The third place’ rather than just a gym
A place that is not home or work.
A place where it’s okay to fail.
A place where emotions that aren’t resolved at work or home
can be expressed physically.
For Coach Cindy, the gym is
a place to meet friends
and a place to receive comfort.
That's why Coach Cindy
wanted to fulfill the same role for her members.
The definition of wellness is “It’s okay to be average”
The wellness Coach Cindy talks about
isn't about perfect balance.
“You don’t need to be greedy about doing well.
It's okay to be average.”
This goes for exercise too.
Some days just 10 minutes,
other days it's okay to rest.
This effortless persistence
has kept Coach Cindy moving for 12 years.
If this story resonates with you
If you’ve read this far,
you might have had these thoughts.
Maybe I’ve been too focused on doing things perfectly
When it’s okay to be average, wasn’t I pushing myself too hard?
Coach Cindy's story was about
adjusting life's pace.
